The National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century-established on July 15, 1915 - is a non-profit lineage organization open to women of good character, eighteen years of age or older. To be eligible for membership, one must first be invited to join by the Society. Next she would need to provide documentary proof she is a lineal descendant of an ancestor who lived and served in one of the Original Colonies in the geographical area of the present United States.
The society’s national headquarters was constructed in 1884 in Washington, DC. It houses one of the nation’s largest collections of Coat of Arms depictions, all of which belong to ancestors of the society’s members. The society is made up of chapters located in 46 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada. A membership of over 11,000 shares a common interest in American history, respect and love for the United States of America, and a strong desire to harmoniously work together to complete the objectives of the society. Capt. Nicholas Martiau Chapter in Beaumont, Texas, meets 4 times a year for a Dutch treat lunch at a local restaurant. Unless otherwise stated, the meetings are at 11:00 a.m. on the third Saturdays of October, January, March, and May. Programs are usually on a historical or patriotic topic. Visitors and prospective members are welcome to attend all meetings, including Genealogy Days on the first Saturday of each month from October through April, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, at the Tyrrell Historical Library, 695 Pearl Street, Beaumont, Texas. Members are happy to help prospective members research their lines and fill out paperwork. We are a happy, congenial group of ladies with the goals of promoting patriotism, preserving history, and serving our community. There are many ways to be active in committees, offices, and membership.
